The newly established and much anticipated Roots & Culture Productions at Sunrise presents two stages to showcase a diverse range of heavy basslines and urban sounds with the most positive of vibration. Expect an audio injection all about the RAW, the RHYTHM and the RHYME. A body beat fix to make you get down and dirty with holistic hiphop and lyrical gymnastics, the most delicious of reggae and earthy dub live bands and eclectic Djs, with more than enough room to step it up, keeping your feet firmly ROOTED to the Roots and Culture dance floor.


Chai Wallahs - Where all good things come together

Winners of ‘Glastonbury’s’ 2007 Greenpeace Gold Trader Award. Chai Wallahs is a completely ethical and unique venue that seeks to provide an alternative and enlightening and sensually indulgent experience and positive healing vibe to festival goers, whilst being a platform for fresh, creative talent that bridges the gap between cnscious and cool...The venue has been running for over 10 years but has expanded dramatically over the last 3 years. It now contains a beverage bar serving Organic Smoothies & Juices, Vodka & Rum Organic Cocktails, Herbal & Wheatgrass Shots, and a wide selection of Herbal Tea’s & Indian Chai. Hailing from Cardiff this crew and venue brings you a host of urban arts but with a delicious theatrical twist 'Peaceful Progress is an eclectic mix of graffiti artists, beatboxers, theatrical breakers, reggae-romatherapy and musical mayhem and magic. A truly sensual experience that explores urban arts with a smile. At Sunrise Peaceful Progress will house workshops, poetry slams and host a whole range of dynamic and fresh artists, making lovely things happen to your ears and eyes. Inter Africa

We are a dedicated group of drummers who work with people from all over the world. We run large high energy drum workshops that are suitable for beginners to expert. We work with 70 djembe, boogaraboo, djun djun and darabooka drums and a host of other percussion instruments. In all enough for about 120 people to be involved. We are actively involved with the festival scene taking our workshop around the country. This is 21st century drum workshops that bring people together, pull large crowds, sound brilliant and make the people involved and part of something very special…Let’s get back to our ROOTS. Inter Africa also presents a marquee which will host a beautifully decorated open mike stage. The space is called djundjunbar, which is an african rhythm and drum. Come and explore the sounds of instruments from all around the world as well as the classic stage instruments alongside an array of other musos wanting to create and intergrate. A vital part of Roots & Culture is Jamming. ALL welcome.

Green Graffiti Challenge –Where artists are asked to put down their spray cans and create a piece using natural/ recycled paint and brushes with a ‘green’ theme.

Sunrise Summer Poetry Slam and Poet vs Emcee contest:

The Wandering Word and Roots and Culture Productions have spared no headspace in creating a lyrical spectacular that brings together 6 Poets and 6 Emcees to compete in this on going universal battle of rhyme with you the audience as the judges on the Sunday of Sunrise. Is it all the same or are poets and emcees as different as strings and percussion? Who will come up trumps? Take your side now! And if that wasn’t participation enough, there will be an open slam on the Saturday that is calling for all spoken word artists, spitters ,poetic pugilists and vocal virgins to get up and share their words!

There are only 12 places available, so please sign up on site before 12.30 on the Saturday. Poems must be 3 minutes maximum, judged by members of the audience on content, performance and audience response. Two winners will be chosen to go through to the Poets Vs Emcees slam showdown on the Sunday and see how they fare with the pros but who will be crowned Sunrise Slam Champion 2008 and receive a ticket for Shambala festival alongside other yummy prizes? Whether Poet or Emcee you can be sure that there’s gonna be some blistering spoken word in the Roots & Culture arena before were done.

Emcee workshops with Elemental

This is for anyone and everyone who’s ever wanted to be a Hip hop emcee. Using easy techniques aimed at anyone from 8 to 88, Elemental will teach you the secrets of rapping and performing in a lively and engaging workshop. You’ll get the chance to write your own rhymes, learn how to perform them over a beat and will even get the chance to try them out in front of an audience! Elemental is an acclaimed Brighton emcee, storyteller and performance poet with the skills to teach anyone and everyone to rap. www.elementalmc.co.uk

Capoeira: demos and workshops every day all ages welcome

Capoeira is a fluid mix of dance, martial art, theatre, ritual and music with its roots in the Brazilian slave trade. Today capoeira thrives all over the world, with high energy performances that pit the players against each other in a ritualised combat. Behind the kicks and flips and the songs and music, capoeiristas love to laugh, and love to entertain. We will be presenting workshops with Marcelo Angola, a capoeira Mestre from Brazil. Marcelo has years of experience teaching capoeira, and his classes are accessible to beginners and experienced players alike. Participants will be introduced to the basic moves of capoeira, the gameplay, the music and the history.
