First prize is a luxury break in a stunning Iron Age roundhouse courtesy of Sawday’s Canopy & Stars...
and a pair of tickets to Sunrise… for LIFE!!!
plus £200 worth of goodies supplied by Good Energy for the best dressed entrants!!!
This is our newly announced competition to come up with the most innovative, creative and (not forgetting the most important part), low impact way of traveling to the Sunrise Celebration Festival 2010! This can be anything - from a solar powered jetpack to a hot air balloon powered on bottled cow-farts. It could also be as simple as pedaling on a souped up bicycle or taking a train from Ulaan Bataar to Bruton. The key component of all this, however, is that not only must you design your means of travel, but actually get to the event on it!
The challenge, which is sponsored by Canopy & Stars and Good Energy, is to combine both a sense of fun and a genuine consideration for the environment in your chosen transport form. All entries need to be low-carbon AND low-impact, which means that they make the smallest possible environmental footprint - no nuclear!
What prizes are to be won?
The winner will be given and luxury three night break at the stunning Canopy & Stars Iron Age roundhouse* AND 2x free tickets to the Sunrise Festivals for life!* Runners-up will win a selection of Good Energy gadgets worth over £200 from the Good Energy shop. (All entrants will win an exclusive Sunrise Gift Pack).

Canopy & Stars are delighted to be sponsoring the Sunrise Wacky Races, with the first prize being a stay in the stunning Canopy & Stars Iron Age roundhouse in Cornwall. If you have a look at the website you'll see they are also championing unusual ways to arrive at their places too - from a glider, by foot, boat or bike, even by horse and cart!
Sawday's Canopy & Stars is a wonderful collection of beautiful and quirky places of a camping kind But we're not talking about any old camping experience and we're not just talking about tents. Over the coming months they'll have everything from stunning treehouses, luxury yurts, shepherd's huts, safari tents, log cabins and Gypsy caravans - even an Iron Age roundhouse. Why are we running this challenge?
Sunrise is both a carnival of color and fun, and a serious forum for the exchange of ideas, skills and concepts of sustainability. The Wacky Racers Challenge combines both of these elements and asks people to use their infinite creativity to explore new ways of travelling to the event.
Transport is one of the major sources of emissions for any festival, as well as for those attending. It is the 'Elephant in the Room' for any festival claiming to be already 'sustainable.' This challenge aims to draw attention to this key area and highlight the need for continuing ingenuity in facing and overcoming these kind of issues.
Hopefully the challenge will prove an inspiration for all those involved and all those who learn about it over the coming months. We would like to see it grow and develop in future years to engage ever-larger numbers of festivalgoers in building a more sustainable future.
Who can enter the challenge and how do I do it?
- Anyone can enter as long as they have a valid ticket to Sunrise Festival 2010
- Entrants must be 17 or over
- Individuals can enter by themselves or as part of a team
- The vehicle or means of travel can already be owned/pre-built by the entrants, owned by somebody or something else, and does not have to be made specifically for the journey
- A video or pictures must be taken along route and submitted at the information stall by the end of the Friday of the festival. These can be files stored on a camera or a memory stick.
- Entrants must register prior to the event at: www.sunrisecelebration.com/#competitions/travel-challenge.php where they can download an application for the challenge (see bottom of page).
What will entrants be judged upon?
- The distance travelled
- The “wackiness” and originality of the idea
- How 'low-impact' it is
- How 'applicable' the means of transport is, i.e. could it be used as a prototype for creating a viable form of sustainable travel
- Does the means of transport embody the spirit of the festival
- The novelty of the journey
Who will judge the winners?
The Judges will include two representatives of the Sunrise Celebration festival. Alongside us, also judging will be Roger Saul, founder of Mulberry (as well as Sharpham Park Organics and Kilver Court Gardens) and renowned eco-car racer, plus another celebrity guest.
