Kids Stuff

Sunrise Celebration has something to offer the whole family and many arenas will have something of interest to young people (and those young at heart!). Features this year will include a new climbing wall, swingboats and rides, kids disco, circus and crafts workshops, parades, a maze, outdoor games and more. For the older kids there will be graffiti walls, breakdance, poetry slams, hip hop, circus shows and skills, bushcraft skills and lots lots more still to be confirmed.

As most of the Sunrise Team have kids themselves (or stepkids at least!) the festival is designed with the family in mind. We intend to create a safe and fun environment for the young to be in, however, whilst encouraging free-range kids, we also caution parents to be aware of the locations of their kids and not to try and use the kids area as a creche - It isn't! Sunrise can be a great place for a child to grow and explore amongst a community who will help look out for them. We are sure they will thank you for it! Opportunity for Schools to see Sustainability in action at The Sunrise Celebration Festival.

The Award-winning Sunrise Celebration festival, scheduled for May 29th - June 1st 2008, is offering South Somerset primary schools a chance for an educational visit to the event site shortly before opening. Two schools, one of which will be Ash Village Primary School, will be given the chance to bring a party of school children to the festival on the morning of Thursday May 29th. The children will be shown around by members of the event team and will be able to take part in various activities and information sessions focusing on sustainability in action.

Some of the highlights of the trip will include a visit to the Sunworshippers Planetarium where children will be taken on a voyage through the ages via the constellations and a talk and demonstration about how solar technologies are bringing hope to people in Africa, from the festival's chosen charity Solar Aid. Other activities will focus on permaculture gardening and musical participation.

"The school children coming down to the event is one of the highlights of each year," says Operations Manager, Dan Hurring. "We are really keen to ensure that Sunrise involves members of the local community and provides direct benefits wherever possible. The children are our future and we have to make sure that they are aware of the issues facing our world and the myriad solutions that are possible."

The award winning Sunrise Celebration has recently been listed on Virtual Festivals and in the Guardian as having the leading green credentials of all UK Music festivals, and is run entirely on renewable energy, has a site wide organic food policy, compost toilets, and a team of dedicated eco-rangers who help and educate people on how to be as green as possible. There is whole arena dedicated to providing a ‘festival within a festival’ for kids with special spaces for Teens and Toddlers and there are children’s activities in each of the other 12 arenas, including a climbing wall, fairground rides, crafts, trampolines, green graffiti and storytelling. The event is family focused and occurs during half term week for most schools, however this didn’t stop Ash school getting the children together during the holidays so they didn’t miss out on this great opportunity.

Schools wishing to apply to attend the festival should email or telephone Festivalife Ltd, the event organisers, via either 0845 0096347 or via info@sunrisecelebration.com. Closing date for applications is April 25th 2008. Priority will be given to primary schools within the immediate vicinity of the festival site.
