Sunrise Celebration Wins An Award The Sunrise Summer Solstice Celebration 2006 held in June in South Somerset won an award at the Virtual Festivals ceremony in London in October.
The award, which was sponsored by Shelter, was a fitting epitaph to the first event from parent company Family Gathering Ltd based in Glastonbury, Somerset.
Adam Sampson, chief executive for housing charity Shelter, praised the organisers for their environmental efforts.
He said: "We're thrilled to be part of this year's UK Festival Awards, and to use Shelter's own award to recognise those festival organisers who not only put on a great party but also used their events to bring about positive social change.
"My warm congratulations to the organisers of this year's Sunrise Summer Solstice Celebration, which set a new benchmark when it comes to music festivals operating sustainably, and engaging effectively with the local community."
The event featured an organic and ethical policy, with more than 60 compost toilets on a site entirely powered by bio-diesel.
Dan Hurring, one of the organisers, said: "We like to think we are hosting a space for the most cutting-edge and green ways of life for the general populous. Our focus is on setting the standard in festival production that is ethical, sustainable and can be carried in to daily life.
"From the compost toilets and solar powered areas, to the alternative education and live acts, we want to bridge the gap between the green movement and those who enjoy an exciting festival atmosphere."
Jonathan Cainer Supports Sunrise Jonathan Cainer, lead astrologist for the Daily Mail, has been an avid supporter of Sunrise since his attendance at the 2006 event.
He has offered to help this year's event with additional financial support.
He commented, “Sunrise is a glorious coming together of the many different aspects of alternative culture that make this land of ours such a wonderful place to live in. I thoroughly enjoyed last years event and eagerly look forwards to this one.”

The event was granted a license for up to 9,999 people to include over 15 music and performance venues with round the clock music across the site.
The granting of the license means it is full steam ahead for the 2007 event of the summer. Local residents have been spotted dancing in the streets with the good news. And the sun is shining again!!
