Sunrise at the Big Chill Big Treats

With just over two weeks to go everyone is getting excited about the Big Chill. The Sunrise field promises to be packed with our usual festival extravaganza, all be it on a smaller scale. With the campaigns area giving out important information and hosting some great talks to the intimate feel of the music line up, along with some guest appearances, the essence of Sunrise will be encapsulated and undiluted. We’ve also come up with a few new ideas to bring the spirit of Sunrise and the Big Chill together.

With both festivals being proud of their independent status and championing worthy causes, (the Big Chill’s programmes are being sold along with the Big Issue, and Sunrise’s continuing commitment to 100% renewable energy), the partnership has worked out better than first expected and we’ve both discovered we’ve more in common than we thought. The two new Sunrise events that are unique to the Big Chill this year are the Ethical Fashion Show and the Astro Heart Share, with the aim of both to cross social and cultural boundaries in a fun and inspirational way, things are shaping up to be a great party with some important messages included.

Jonathan Cainer’s Astro Heart Share

UP TO 30,000 people will take place in the world’s largest SPEED DATING EVENT!

An Astro Heart Share will be presented on behalf of Sunrise Festival at the Big Chill by Jonathan Cainer, the UK’s leading astrologer. Jonathan has a long association with Sunrise, having hosted a Sunday workshop for us at every festival so far. He’ll be talking on the Sunday this year too, in the Sunrise area at 3pm. And he’ll be working with the Sunrise team all weekend on this new and exciting idea that everyone can join in with. This, In essence, is the world’s largest “speed dating” event. Only it’s not just about dating. It’s about making friends, networking, meeting people, discovering soul mates and deepening affinities. “Festivals” says Jonathan, “are full of likeminded folk who you just know you’re going to enjoy getting to know. Here’s a way to take a quick interaction and turn it, potentially, into a lifelong connection.” Every single person who comes to The Big Chill, regardless of whether they’re a ‘Sunriser’ or not, is invited to take part, all it costs is a £1.00 donation. Each player gets a card, tailored to their ‘astrological element’. Your card contains a bunch of special questions you can ask other people on the field... and their card will contain questions for you. When you want to play, you just wear the card around your neck. Like a necklace. Or an access all areas ‘lanyard’. After the ‘Heartshare’ when you have asked each other the questions, you give each other your respective ‘heartshare codes’. On your return to the heartshare tent, you register your interest in making contact with a particular person again. If they register the same interest in you, the ‘real world’ contact details are released to each of you. And for anyone who gets too caught up in the rest of the festival to get back to the tent in time, the same process can happen at the heartshare site on line! For additional astrological depth and integrity, a team of top astrologers will be on hand to select Heartshare participants at random and give them full astrological birth chart readings based on their date, time and place of birth. If you don’t want to ‘win a chart reading’ because you’d rather pay for one and be sure of getting it, the astrologers will also be doing regular readings throughout the event in the Sunrise field. “These astrologers are,” says Jonathan, “The people I would go to if I wanted my own chart to be read!” High praise indeed from the man that millions rely on for advice each day. Will Heartshare be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, which in years to come you can reminisce about how you met at Sunrise at the Big Chill? Let us know all about it after the festival on the Sunrise forum. Good luck, may we all find our soul mates and live happily ever after in a fairytale reality, (well maybe not but you get the idea)!

The Ethical Fashion Show

The Ethical Fashion Show is the second idea from the team of creative genius’s we have working at the Sunrise office, (we lock them in the supply cupboard at night and don’t let them out to eat until a Sunrise worthy idea is on the table). And on the subject of slave labour, which opens up the topic of the modern fashion industry, I can talk about one of the main reasons we decided to put on the Ethical Fashion Show. As many of us are making the effort to live a more conscious life but still survive within the bounds of modern society, all be it on the fringes. One of the main areas we can make a difference is in what we wear. This isn’t always easy as the cost of organic non-dyed cotton, or hemp silk clothes aren’t exactly at Primark prices, but with slave labour used to create most of the clothes we wear; intensive farming using heavy pesticides and gross amounts of water used to produce cotton; transportation from third world areas to the west, creating CO2 emissions; and manufacturing of non-biodegradable, chemically produced manmade fibres, it’s time we all started taking responsibility for what covers our skin. Those Primark monetary prices hide the huge human cost we actually pay for a cheap pair of knickers. Sunrise brought the idea of the ethical fashion show to the Big Chill who were delighted to support and collaborate on the event, with both festivals feeling that it was an excellent medium to reach out to people and get across an important message in a funky, fun way. The cutting edge of society’s creativity has always been music and art, and festivals have been at the forefront in bringing the ‘way out there’ to the mainstream; where art leads, life follows. With fashion in its purest form being creative and moving art, it is therefore no surprise that it fits in very well on the festival scene, especially Sunrise which aims to create a rootsy, underground experience throughout the festival. The fashion show will incorporate two competitions, firstly; any Sunrise tickets holders who have swapped their tickets for Big Chill tickets, or who have bought Big Chill tickets through the Sunrise website can enter the ‘Find a model’ competition. Sunrise are looking for 10 women, 2 men, 4 girls, four boys and three mothers/babies. So if you fancy yourself strutting down the catwalk adorned with hemp and bamboo fibres or beautiful recycled designs then enter the comp and write 200 words on what you do to support ethical living. Not exactly ‘I believe in world peace’, but something along those lines. Send this, along with a photograph to the office address before Friday 25th July.

The second competition will take place at The Big Chill Nights tent in the field next to the Sunrise field at the Big Chill where a select number of Sunrise and Big Chill traders will be showcasing their ethical fashion collections. They will be judged on both, how ethical their designs are and on the designs themselves. They also get the chance to strut their stuff on one of the Big Chill’s main stages with more established ethical designers like People Tree, Pants to Poverty and Howies. The Environmental Justice Foundation will be hosting the event and talking to the audience about current issues in the fashion world today. It promises to be a star studded event while getting across a very important message. The ethical fashion designers taking part in the competition are: Amanda Chambers, Jenny McCarty, Sophie Harrison, Marie Maurice, Anat Madar, Sandari and The Natural Fibre Company- watch this space for more details on the participants.
Ethical fashion isn’t all about un-dyed, fluffy woollen jumpers- from pixie to urban chic and club wear to elegant cuts the designers prove you don’t need slave labour and toxic chemicals to produce clothes we actually want to wear.
